I don't believe I've seen a piece quite like this one. It has an elaborate geometric-shaped setting in gilt brass, with both engraving and black enamel work framing a small hardstone cameo held in place by four wide, engraved prongs. The figure is wearing either a high headdress or bonnet and is complete but tiny. There are two fringed pendants dangling from the bottom of the piece. The back is even more unfamiliar to me: it has the old "c" clasp, but the pin isn't straight, but has an arc in the center. There are two hooks at the top of the piece and one at the bottom. Perhaps to wear as a pendant with a watch or locket dangling from the bottom--you be the judge. Any ideas are welcome.
Although there is finish wear on the back, the front is in excellent condition. The pin is 1 1/4 x 1 1/2" and 3" long including the dangling pieces. An unusual and interesting find. |
